Gimmicks & Gadgets
Funky hats, glasses, LED staffs, laser pointers, bright headphones, fun tees and other fun gadgets and gimmicks can be a great way to stand out and show off your personality. Often DJ’s when performing hide behind their table and show no personality while playing to their audience, this is a big mistake. Even though the idea seems cheesy, don’t underestimate the impact of using props in your show. Once again, you don’t have to spend a lot of money here, you just have to be creative. Are you a handy and can build something from basic materials ? Is there anything that you could build as a weekend project that would look great, or be fun to play in onstage? Could you create a unique table for your gear to play in. Gather some inspiration from the big budget productions, and brainstorm to see if there’s anything you’d be able to emulate from those performances that you could build for your own show.
Costumes are the way to stand out, this is common sense, but so over looked, your clothing and appearance onstage are a big part of your show.
Over the years I would bring a fun bag with hats, glasses and other fun gimmicks depending on the crowd. The guests eat it up and you stand out and remain remembered in their heads as the fun DJ with the hat or cool party tee -shirts.
This simple yet often overlooked part is so important to the over all style your trying to portray – Fun kids parties go wild wear the neon, have the gimmicks and fun gadgets, be entertaining.
Another great aspects that your clients will love, bring in live entertainment. An important task of the DJ is the music, I always recommend a live percussionist, bongo players, violin or saxophonist to play along with the DJ or give them a solo. The energy is contagious and the music comes to life.
Gimmicks sell and they work…..Look at the biggest stars in Hollywood, on the red carpet, in music videos and online they all have a gimmick they use, they all dress outlandish, they all stand out. Your entertainment has to be entertaining. Technology is evolving and so are the DJ’s. Adapt or die. Simply a matter of survival. You have to stand out.
Here is something to think about.
Do you think Deadmau5 likes to wear that helmet while up on stage performing? Do you think KISS enjoys painting their faces every concert?
Everyone knows who they are, and there is a good reason for it.
Gimmicks and gadgets are the key to stand out and be remembered. Find your gimmick find your style and implement it. Soon people will take notice.
